Whether you’re a birding expert, a flower lover or just learning how to use your first pair of binoculars, we have a Birdathon event that’s just right for you.
From bird house building competitions, to movie screenings, to walks around Woodend — we have lots of opportunities for you to grab your friends, family and coworkers and get involved!
Bird House Build-Off Contest REGISTER

The first of the birdhouse entries are in! View the birdhouses and VOTE for your favorite.
Birdhouses will be on display in our Sanctuary Shop at our Woodend Nature Sanctuary headquarters throughout the Birdathon, April 22 through May 25.

Come to Woodend Nature Sanctuary and enjoy an author talk inspired by the Bloomin’ Birdathon. In “Birds of a Feather,” an informative and beautifully illustrated book, Colin Rees and Derek Thomas portray the changing season in the UK and US, bringing their observations together with some startling results.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll through our Blair Native Garden at Woodend Nature Sanctuary with experienced botanist and ANS volunteer, Liz Jones. Learn about native plant gardening and count blossoms as part of the Bloomin’ Birdathon.

Take a load off with us during A Big Sit for ANS. Get your Bloomin’ Birdathon count done with other beginner and novice birders. We’ll sit together at Woodend Nature Sanctuary, enjoy the camaraderie and count birds for our favorite cause – ANS!

Want to learn more about birding in Maryland? Join an expert bird leader at our Beginner Bird Walk and learn to identify a variety of bird species as part of the Bloomin’ Birdathon.

This is a perfect opportunity to gather the family and join our expert bird leaders for our Weekend Walk in the Woods! Enjoy a walk around Woodend Nature Sanctuary and learn about birds and blossoms as part of the Bloomin’ Birdathon. All ages are welcome.
After the walk, drop in on the Binocular Basics demonstration and try out the latest in binoculars and scopes.

Need help choosing the perfect pair of binoculars? The experts at Minox, USA Inc. will be at Woodend Nature Sanctuary to demonstrate the latest in spotting scopes and binoculars.
The demonstration is continuous – please join us at any time! Samples of scopes and binoculars will be available for participants to try.
Bird Eggstravaganza! REGISTER

Hunt for the cause! Support ANS during the Bloomin’ Birdathon by hunting for “bird eggs” hidden around Woodend Nature Sanctuary. Find eggs and trade them in for treats and prizes. If you’re lucky, you might even find a few golden eggs!
The hunting is not just for the youngest naturalists. Try geocaching adventures too, to serach for special bird themed caches.
But wait…there’s more! You can learn all about birds by visiting education stations around the property. Station topics include bird nesting, physical adaptions, and native gardens that provide bird habitats.

Support ANS during the Bloomin’ Birdathon with an evening in (at Woodend Nature Sanctuary) watching a movie. “The Big Year,” starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, is a comedy about two birding enthusiasts who are trying to defeat the cocky, cutthroat world record holder in a year-long bird-spotting competition.

With the spring season well underway, spend an afternoon in the Blair Native Garden at Woodend Nature Sanctuary with ANS Senior Naturalist, Stephanie Mason. Soak up the sun while learning about native plants and count blossoms as part of the Bloomin’ Birdathon.
