SAT, July 10
* Delaware Coastal Areas
3/4 day. 15-person limit. Bring pack lunch. May visit Sambo’s for mid-day relief. To avoid the heat, meet at 6 a.m. at new place, Dover’s Best Diner—open 24 hours, about 1/2 mi. south of Del-8/US-13 junct in Dover, Del. Eat before you meet; carpooling may be an option. Entrance fee/passcards needed at Bombay Hook NWR. Bird locations variable, depending on habitat, water, and heat conditions. Shorebirds at early to mid- migration peak; waterbirds; some edge-habitat songbirds. Equipment suggested are long pants, long-sleeved shirt, and comfortable shoes (relatively little walking expected). Calf-high rubber boot may be desirable for early-morning wet vegetation. Strong insect repellent with DEET highly recommended. Early afternoon trip breakup. For persons wishing to overnight in Dover before trip, Days Inn (302-674-8002), Comfort Inn (302-674-3300), Ramada Inn (302-734-5701), Howard Johnson (302-678-8900) or Comfort Suites (302-736-1204) or Dover Inn (302-674-4011) suggested. Senior citizen and government rates may be available. Reserve room EARLY by phone and credit card. Note: Dover’s Best Diner currently being remodeled (and to be renamed Sorrentinos Restaurant). Should be re-opened by July 4th; if closed, meet at IHOP across Rt. 113 and a block east.
 

WED, July 14
* Woodbridge/Occoquan Bay NWR
1/2 day. 6-person limit. Meet 7:30 a.m. at front gate of refuge. Nesting songbirds, waterbirds, eagles, and other raptors. Mixture of walking and driving. Some carpooling at entrance. Waterproof shoes, insect repellent, and long pants suggested. Trip leaders Jim Waggener and Charlie Creighton. Make reservations with leader Jim Waggener(Alexandria) 703-567-3555
SUN, July 18
* Delaware Coastal areas
1 full day. Bring pack lunch and other snacks/drinks. Specified person limit to be determined. Meet 5 a.m. at One Good Tern, 1710 Fern St. Alexandria, to join van driven by leader or a carpool caravan. All day shorebirding at Bombay Hook, Little Creek, Logan Tract, and other sites of shorebird southbound migration; waterbirds; marsh birds; early waterfowl; and edge-habitat songbirds likely. For carpool-caravan birders desiring Sun. overnighting locations, consult with carpoolers ahead of trip and consider motels suggested in July 10 Del. Coastal trip. Advance reservations suggested. See “equipment suggested” sentences in July 10 trip. Entrance fees/passcards apply at Bombay Hook. * Delaware Coastal Areas
1 day. 15-person limit. Bring pack lunch. Meet 7:15 a.m. at headquarters/visitor’s parking lot at Bombay Hook NWR, Del. Carpooling may be an option. Eat before meeting; Hollywood Diner or Dover’s Best Diner—open 24 hours are both in Dover, and Smyrna Diner in Smyrna; they are along US-13, and open all night. See July 10 trip this issue for additional required information, including suggested motels. Shorebirds at mid-migration peak; waterbirds; and some songbirds along wood/marsh trail edges. Directions
Banshee Reeks, Loudoun County areas
Take VA 15 south from Leesburg. Approx. 1/4 mi. so. of Leesburg bypass, turn left (east) onto County Road 621, Evergreen Mill Rd. and go about 5 mi. passing landfill en route. About 1 mi. past landfill, turn right (west) onto County Route 771, the Woods Rd. Continue about 1 mi. to Banshee Reeks on left between 2 white fences and at an obvious entrance sign.
Battery Kemble Pk, DC
From Ward Circle, at the jct. of Mass. and Nebraska Aves., N.W., go southwest on Nebraska for 0.5 mi., bear left onto Chain Bridge Rd. After 0.3 mi., at house marker 2828 on the right, turn left into park.

 

Black Hill Regional Park, Md.From DC Beltway, go north on I-270 about 10 mi. to Father Hurley Blvd., MD-27. Go east on Rt. 27 for about 1 mi. to MD-355. Go north on MD-355 for about 2 mi. Go left on Old Baltimore Rd. and follow signs to Black Hill (about 2 mi.). Park in front of Visitor Center.
Cambridge and Blackwater NWR, Md.
Bowie fringe parking lot: From DC Beltway, go east on US-50 for 6-7 mi.; at MD-197/Collington Rd./Bowie exit-take exit ramp, merging into Rt. 197 So.; go 1/4 mi. to light at Northview Dr.; go left into second entrance of parking lot (opposite small "parking" sign). Old Ferry Boat (antique shop): Continue on US-50 east to Choptank River on north edge of Cambridge.
Cape May, NJ
Ferry leaves from Cape Henlopen, (Lewes) Del, several times Fri. afternoon and evening for Cape May. Otherwise, driving route is north past Wilmington, Del., over Del. Memorial Br. and routing on US-40, US-55, and NJ-47.
C & O Canal, Md.
From DC Beltway, take Md.-190 (River Rd.) west through the village of Potomac.   There are many stops along the canal:

Hecht’s is on Wisconsin Ave., just north of Western Ave. at the DC/MD line. For Potomac Safeway, go west on River Rd. (MD-190) to traffic light in Potomac. Safeway is on the left.
Charles Cty., Md. Parks & Refuges
From DC Beltway, take Exit 3A (MD-210) south for 14 mi. to MD-227. Burger King on right.
Chincoteague and Dismal Swamp, Va.
DC Beltway to US-50 east to US-13 in Salisbury, US-13 south to VA-175 east to Chincoteague.
Chinquapin Park, Va.
From inside DC Beltway at 395/King St. junction, go east on King to just past 6th stop light (about 1 1/2 mi.). Turn at first right into Chinquapin Recreation Center.
Delaware Coastal Refuges:
To reach Bombay Hook NWR: From Bay Bridge, go east on US-50 to US-301; go north on 301 to MD-300; go east on MD-300; merge into DE-300 to Smyrna. At Smyrna Diner (open 24 hrs.) go south on US-13 for 1.1 mi.; turn left at light with sign for Bombay Hook NWR; continue for 4.9 mi.; merge into Rt.-9 south; after 0.2 mi. turn east (left) on Whitehall Neck Rd. and go 2.4 mi. to Refuge Visitor’s Center.
Delaware Shorebird Weekend
From US-13/Del. 8 junct. in Dover, go east on Del-8 for about 5 mi., north on Del-9 for about 12 mi. (passing through Leipsic at posted speed limit), and east on Whitehall Neck Rd. (sign for Bombay Hook turn) to Visitor Center.

Delaware Coastal Refuges (2)
From junct. Del-8/US-113 in Dover, go south to green overhead sign, bear left to US-113 (Beaches). After 2nd light, move immediately to right lane, go 65 yds. to Dover Diner on right.

Dumbarton Oaks, D.C.
31st and R streets NW, off Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown.
Dyke Marsh
From Alexandria, take GW Mem. Pkwy south; cross Little Hunting Creek; turn east toward river at sign for Bellehaven Picnic Area. Bear left to south end of parking lot.
Eakin County Park, Va.
From D.C. Beltway, go west on U.S.-50 for 1 mi. to Prosperity Ave.; go left (south) for 1 mi. to park entrance, left into picnic area
Eastern Neck NWR, Md.
From D.C. Beltway, go east on US-50 for 6-7 mi.; at MD-197-Collington Rd./Bowie exit-take exit ramp, merging into Rt. 197 So.; go 1/4 mi. to light at Northview Dr.; go left about 1/4 mi.; go left into second entrance of parking lot (opposite small "parking" sign.)
Eastern Shore Coastal Areas
NE corner of US-13/Del-273, 2 1/2 mi. south of US-13/I-295 or 1 mi. north of motel complex.
Elliott Island, Md.
When approaching Vienna east-bound on US-50, veer right at first Vienna exit. Road quickly merges onto "old US-50." Go about 1/2 mi. to junction with MD-331 on US-50.
Great Falls Park, Va.
From DC Beltway, go west on Georgetown Pike (VA-193), turn right at park sign, go about 1 mi. to park entrance, then straight ahead to main parking lot.
Hart-Miller Island, Md.
From DC Beltway, go north on I-95 through Ft. McHenry tunnel to I-695, Baltimore Beltway. Go east on I-695 about 2 mi.to MD-702, Exit 36 south, Southeast Blvd. on your left. Go south 4.1 mi. until MD-702 becomes Back River Neck Rd. Continue 2.2 mi. on Back River Neck, turn right on Wildwood Beach Rd. After 0.7 mi., turn left on Riverview Rd. Go 0.1 mi. and turn right at 1st driveway. (Disregard no admittance signs.) Parking area at water’s edge.
Hawk Mountain, Pa.
From Harrisburg, Pa. go north on I-83, merge into I-78/US-22, continue to PA-61 exit (Pottsville, Port Clinton) go north 4 1/2 mi. to PA-895, go east 2 1/2 mi. to Drehersville, follow signs for 2 miles to Sanctuary; allow 4 hours driving time; lookout is 3/4 hour uphill walk  from entrance.
Hughes Hollow, Md.
From DC Beltway, take Md.-190 (River Rd.) west through Potomac, to T-junction beside golf course. Turn left and go to Hughes Rd., turn left, and left again into parking areas
Huntley Meadows, Va.
From DC Beltway, take US-1 south for about 3 mi. Go right at traffic light on Lockheed Blvd. for 1.5 mi; turn left into park.
Kenilworth Gardens, DC
From junction Kenilworth Ave./US-50, in N.E. D.C., go south on Kenilworth Ave. about 1/4 mi. to first exit; follow signs to Aquatic Gardens (about 1/2 mi.more) and go to main parking lot.
Little Bennett Regional Park, Md.
From DC Beltway, go north on I-270 about 15 mi. to MD-121 (Clarksburg exit). Go east on MD -121 to MD-355. After intersection with MD-355 (about 1/2 mi.), continue another 1/2 mi. to Kings Park on right.
Loudon Co. Va. areas
From DC Beltway, west on VA-7 for approx. 17 mi. to just east of Leesburg. North on US-15 bypass (toward Frederick Md.) for 2 mi. Merge into US-15 north. Drive approximately 6 mi. into Luckett’s Va. At "Welcome to Luckett’s" sign, turn right (east) on gravel road toward ballfield.
Mason Neck, Va.
From DC Beltway, take I-95 south about 7 mi. to Lorton exit (VA-642). Go left on VA-642 to US-1.

April 28,2002 trip:
From Rt. 1 south, turn left on Gunston Rd., take right on High Point Rd.; parking lot on left.

Meadowood Farm, Va.
From DC Beltway in Virginia, go south on US-1 for 12.2 mi. to Gunston Rd., VA-242 (7-11 store on SE corner). Turn left (ESE) on Gunston Rd. for 3.5 mi. to entrance to Pohick Bay Park. Turn left (North) for 1/4 mi. to parking lot on right.
Montrose Park, D.C.
From Wisconsin Ave., N.W. south of Naval Observatory, turn east on R St. (toward Rock Creek), follow to Avon Pl. on right.
Myrtle Grove, Md.
Go east on DC Beltway from Alexandria, across Woodrow Wilson Bridge, continuing past I-295 interchange, veer off at Indian Head Hgwy. exit toward MD-210 South. Take next immediate two right turns after leaving Beltway, cross over Beltway, turn left into National Park Service parking lot.
National Arboretum
From D.C. Beltway, go west on Rt. 50. At Bladensburg Rd., turn left. Travel 3 blocks to R St., turn left. Entrance is on corner of 24th and R Streets.
Nolan’s Ferry-
Lilypons, Md.
From DC Beltway, go north about 25 mi. on I-270. Exit at Urbana, veer right. Continue until T in road. Proceed into commuter parking lot directly across from T.
Ocean City, Md. and Cape Henlopen, Del.
From high bridge on US-50 into Ocean City, turn south to jetty. Meet where parking lot abuts jetty. Upper-Lower Eastern Shore Areas
Northeast corner of US-13/Del-273, 2 1/2 mi. south of US-13/I-295 or 1 mi. north of motel complex.
Oxon Hill Children’s Farm, Md.
Go east on DC Beltway from Alexandria, cross Wilson Bridge, continuing beyond intersection with I-295 (exit 2); take exit 3A for MD-210 south; take immediate two right turns after leaving Beltway, cross over Beltway, turn left into National Park Service parking lot.
Patuxent River Park, (Jug Bay) Md.
From D.C. Beltway, take MD-4 (Pennsylvania Ave.) south for about 7 miles. At US-301 go south for 3.4 more miles to MD-382 (Croom Rd.). Go left 2.7 miles to Croom Airport Rd. Go left 2.0 miles to park entrance on left. When directed by trip leader, go through entrance and past headquarters parking (1.3 mi.) to parking lot by boat marina.
Pennyfield-Violette’s Lock, Md.
From DC Beltway, west on River Rd. (MD-190) to Potomac Village. Safeway on left. Continue 5.1 miles to Pennyfield Lock Road. Take left 0.9 miles to parking lot.
Point Lookout
Directions to One Good Tern: From 395-take King St. East to 4th light, Quaker St., turn left; at first light, Fern St., turn right; store is half-way down the block at #1710.
Riverbend Park, Va.
From DC Beltway, take exit 13, Georgetown Pike (VA-193) west for 5.5 mi., passing sign for Great Falls Park en route. Go right on Riverbend Rd. for 2.1 mi., bear right on Jeffrey Rd. and continue 1.1 mi. to Riverbend Park entrance on right. Enter park and continue to Visitor’s Center parking areas by river. Meet at boat ramp.
Rock Creek Park, D.C.
From Conn. Ave/Military Rd. junction go east on Military to Park, then south about 1 mi. on Ridge, passing Rock Creek Nature Center, to picnic area #18.
Rust Sanctuary, Leesburg, Va.
D.C. Beltway to Dulles Toll Rd. Exit and stay on toll rd., which becomes the Dulles Greenway, until it ends at the Rt. 7/15 Leesburg Bypass (22 mi.). Go west on the 7/15 bypass, and exit at second exit (Rt. 7 Leesburg Business). Turn right onto Rt. 7 East; go approx. 100 yards to traffic light. Turn right onto Catoctin Circle at light, go 1/8 mi. and turn right again at Children’s Center Rd; proceed to cul-de-sac and Sanctuary driveway. Sanctuary is at 802 Children’s Center Rd. see ANS website for a map if needed
Shenandoah Nat’l Park, Va.
From DC Beltway, go west on I-66 to Gainesville, Va. Continue on US-29-211 to Warrenton. Continue on U.S. 211 to Skyline Drive. Pay toll and go south 1/4 mile to restaurant on right. Go past gas pumps to parking lot.
Snicker’s Gap, Va.
From DC Beltway, take VA-7 west about 45 miles to VA-601. Turn left and immediately right into commuter lot.
Southern Charles Co., Md areas
From D.C. Beltway: Take Md-5 (Branch Ave.) for about 10 mi. Merge onto US-301 south and go about 4 mi., into Waldorf. Blockbuster in shopping center on right, where Md-5 splits and goes south to Pt. Lookout.
Sycamore Landing (C & O Canal)
From DC Beltway, go west on River Rd. (MD-190) 15.8 miles. Go left on Sycamore Landing Rd. to parking lot.
Waggoner’s Gap, Pa.
From DC Beltway, go north on I-270 for 29 mi. Go northeast on US-15 for 50 mi.Go northwest on PA-94 for 9 mi. Take PA-34 to Carlisle. Go 9 mi. west on PA-74 to Waggoner’s Gap.
Washington Monument State Park, Md.
From DC Beltway, go north 25 miles on I-270, exit at Urbana, exit 26. Continue until T in road. Go left 200 yeards, turn left again (note sign for commuter parking) till stop and left again to a right turn into parking lot.
Webb Sanctuary, Clifton Va.
From DC Beltway, take I-66 W about 10 mi. to Fairfax Co. Pkwy. (CTY 7100), South/Springfield exit. Go south on parkway, staying in right lane, and get off at next exit, Lee Hwy (US 29). At top of exit ramp, turn right on Lee Hwy and go to 2nd traffic light. Go left on Clifton Rd. into town of Clifton, turn right on Chestnut St., and follow it to the sanctuary at the end.
Woodbridge/Occoquan NWR, Va.
From DC Beltway, go south on I-95 to Exit 161 (Woodbridge), a left-hand exit merging onto US-1 south. Go across Occoquan Bridge to second light. Go left on Dawson Beach Rd. for 1/2 mi to gate.
Woodend, Chevy Chase, Md.
From DC Beltway, go south on Connecticut Ave. Make left on Manor Rd. At end of Manor Rd. , make right on Jones Bridge Rd. At end of Jones Bridge Rd., make left on Jones Mill Rd. to 8940.
