Become a Stream Monitor
Help Protect and Restore Local Watersheds
The Audubon Naturalist Society’s Water Quality Monitoring Project needs your help! A basic understanding of stream ecology, either through attending one or more of ANS’s water quality programs, or from previous training, is all that’s required. See the catalog for the complete listing of training sessions and sites.
Data collection takes place during May, July, and September at sites in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Volunteers are teamed up, assigned stream sites, given equipment, data sheets and a collection protocol, then sent out to gather information on streamside habitats and macroinvertebrate populations.
If you are interested in becoming an Audubon Naturalist Society Monitor, call 301-652-9188 ext.30 and we will send you a letter outlining the training requirements and the responsibilities of being a stream monitor.
Want a volunteer to lead a stream walk in your neighborhood, help a group of kids discover what lives in their neighborhood stream, or present a video or slide show on water quality? Audubon Naturalist Society Hip Waders are here! To schedule a program with a Hip Wader, call Liz Jones or Regina Sakaria at 301-652-9188 ext.30.
View the “Living Waters” video. This video illustrates how our daily activities affect the health of local waterways and how individuals can help protect and restore them. Call us at 301-6523-9188 or the Glen Preservation Foundation, 301-762-WATR, for details.
